Bench
I joked that this was the whole output of my landscape architecture career. You can actually still go and see it in Rathbone Square, near Oxford Street. It’s a bench I designed in Rhino primarily using the sweep command. Roland and I had the idea that we would sit on it and do some poetry readings about benches but that never happened in the end. Or not yet anyway. I was a landscape architect for Gustafson Porter for about six years, having done a three year degree which actually lasted four because the first year I was just trying to get onto Fine Art. I love the things I’ve learnt from landscaping, mainly things I’ve picked up through more abstract conversations with Shaun and James. At Gustafson Porter what I most remember is making other members of staff birthday cards; this is what I enjoyed more than the work, the office dynamic where I was this young English kid with older people from all different parts of the world. While I worked there I learnt Hungarian from Tibor: I remember ‘Fa’ means ‘Tree’. I also discovered Brazilian pandiero drums and the quica friction drum from my friend Miguel.
